Requesting a device
For people who need a device, and for parents, family members, carers, teachers, and clinicians asking on someone's behalf.
Sending a request
Click Request a device. The form has six short parts:
- Who it's for: their first name, age, and your relationship to them.
- About the hand or arm: which side, and which description fits best. A follow-up question may ask whether the wrist or elbow bends; that tells us which kind of device will work.
- Sizing photos: see below.
- The device: we mark a suggestion based on your answers. If you're not sure, leave it; your volunteer will help you choose. You can also tell us favorite colors or themes.
- About you / where you are: so we can find volunteers near you.
- Sharing: whether e-NABLE may share photos of the finished device.
If you're new, your free account is created in the same step. We'll email you a link to confirm your address. Matching starts as soon as you click it.
Taking good sizing photos
Volunteers use photos to work out the right size, so they make a big difference:
- Lay both hands or arms flat on a table and take the photo from directly above.
- Put a ruler or tape measure right next to them.
- Take one with the palm down and one with the palm up.
- Keep faces out of the pictures.
One photo is enough to get started. You can add more any time from your request page. There's also a short video showing how.
What happens next
- We invite the e-NABLE volunteers closest to you who make that kind of device. If someone nearby can meet in person, they're asked first.
- The first volunteer who's available takes your request. You don't need to approve anything. We email you their name and contact details, and they'll get in touch.
- You can message your volunteer on your request page. You'll get an email whenever they post an update.
- When the device is handed over or shipped, we'll ask you to confirm it arrived, or to ask for an adjustment if the fit isn't right.
If it's taking a while
- If no one is available nearby, we keep inviting the next-closest volunteers every few days.
- After a week, a coordinator personally looks for a volunteer, and we may suggest a nearby e-NABLE chapter.
- If you haven't heard from your volunteer, press I need help on your request page. A coordinator will step in.
Repairs, resizes, and growing kids
Children often need a bigger device as they grow. On a completed request, click Request a follow-up. Your details are filled in, and your previous volunteer is asked first.
Closing a request
If you no longer need a device, open your request and choose Close this request. It's no problem at all.
