How it works
We've made this as simple as possible. Families never have to approve steps along the way; you just get your device.
For families
- Send a requestTell us who it's for, what the hand or arm is like, and add sizing photos (both hands or arms, flat on a table, next to a ruler). If you're not sure which device to ask for, that's fine; we'll suggest one and your volunteer will help you choose.
- Confirm your emailSo we know we can reach you.
- We find a volunteerWe personally invite the volunteers closest to you who make that kind of device. If someone nearby can meet you in person, they come first. If not, we look for the nearest volunteer who can ship to you.
- Your volunteer gets in touchUsually within a few days. You can message each other on the request page, and you'll get an email whenever there's news.
- They make your deviceYou'll see progress updates (sizing, printing, assembling, fitting) as they happen.
- You receive itTell us it arrived, or ask for an adjustment if the fit isn't right.
For volunteers
- Create a volunteer profileWhere you are, how far you can travel, whether you can ship, how many requests you can handle at once, and the kinds of devices you're comfortable making.
- Get approvedA coordinator reviews new volunteer profiles, usually within a day or two. This protects families, many of whom are children.
- Choose a requestWe'll email you about requests that fit you, and you can browse all open requests near you. Each one tells you what you'll need to do, the skills and equipment needed, and how long it usually takes. You decide whether you're confident to take it on.
- Take itThe first volunteer to take a request gets it. You'll immediately see the family's contact details. It is important that each volunteer not take on any more work than they are confident they will be able to complete in a timely manner.
- Keep the family postedOne click updates the progress. If life gets in the way, you can hand the request back and we'll find someone else.
What if things stall?
- If nobody takes a request within 3 days, we invite the next-nearest volunteers, and keep going.
- After 7 days, a coordinator steps in personally, and may reach out to a nearby e-NABLE chapter.
- If a volunteer goes quiet for 14 days we remind them, and a coordinator checks in if it continues.
- Families can press “I need help” on their request at any time to reach a coordinator.
